Researchers have recently published in the Annals of Internal Medicine that using sunscreen regularly does indeed protect the skin against aging! The conducted study concluded that participants who applied sunscreen every day showed 24% less skin aging, identified by increased lines and coarseness of skin, compared to those participants who were instructed to apply SPF sporadically, as they would for their usual routine.
The conclusions of this research resulted from studying a group of 903 adults younger than 55 years of age (this assured the aging effects were results of sun exposure) living in Nambur, Australia. All participants were given sunscreen with a 15+ SPF, or higher. Half of the group of participants were randomly chosen and instructed to apply the sunscreen daily to exposed areas, reapplying after water immersion, heavy sweating and long lengths of time outdoors. The other half of the remaining participants were instructed to use the SPF as normal (which was irregularly!).
The results? 77% of the participants who were to use SPF daily, applied it 3-4 days a week compared to the 33% of the control group in the experiment. To validate that the regular application of SPF does help slow the production of wrinkles, researchers took silicone impressions of the back of study participants’ hands at the beginning of the study and compared them to impressions taken after 4.5 years. The line impressions and coarseness of the skin was then rated on a scale of 1-6. The outcomes showed a reduced sign of skin damage and, consequently, a lower risk of skin cancer! Two benefits for one responsible action!
Although we’ve heard that application of SPF is a must and is essential to our skin’s health, this study successfully acts as hard evidence to prove the claims. The reality is that our society tends to be a very vain one and the threat of wrinkles can seem more powerful than the threat of cancer admitted the researchers.
We urge you to remember the importance of using a water-resistant, broad spectrum SPF of at least 30, and apply generously and routinely. So if not for any other reason, apply sunscreen to prevent wrinkles! There is no shame in being safe and protecting yourself.
